PortTechExpo 2012

The third annual PortTechExpo is fast approaching! On September 5th and 6th, maritime industry leaders, technology entrepreneurs, and investors will gather to advance the environmental, energy, transportation, and security initiatives of our City and the Port of Los Angeles. The event, hosted by non-profit technology center and incubator PortTechLA, attracts over 20 sponsors, 50 exhibitors, and 300 individuals, venture capitalists, and community leaders each year.
The PortTechExpo has been lauded as an unparalleled “growing green” platform by elected officials, including Bonnie Lowenthal, Assemblymember 54th District, and Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of the City of Los Angeles. As the 2011 Expo keynote speaker, Mayor Villaraigosa noted, “Whether you are an entrepreneur; investor; or service provider; attending the PortTechExpo is an opportunity to become a part of an exciting, forward-looking, and unique effort that is destined to establish the technology standards required by all sustainable ports in the future, worldwide.” PortTechLA representatives anticipate Mayor Villaraigosa’s advocacy and attendance again this fall. Here are a few reasons why YOU should attend this year, too.
PortTechExpo Highlights
Exhibitors |Companies demonstrate their technology solutions to hundreds of potential funders, tech company suppliers and consultants, and media outlets. Exhibiting at the PortTechExpo is an opportunity for invaluable industry exposure.
Investment Pitches | Venture pitch presentations provide entrepreneurs with critical access to angel investors and early-stage venture capitalists. This is where the partnerships begin!
Panel Discussions | Breakout sessions and panel discussions cover a range of critical environmental technology needs, challenges, and solutions. Speakers from experienced marine engineering, transportation, and technical services companies; government officials; and Port executives share their knowledge and answer your questions. It’s an opportunity for mentorship, networking, and brainstorming. Last year these panels included topics such as deploying new technology to penetrate the maritime market, funding sources for maritime technology, homeland security, and a roadmap to local and statewide emissions requirements.
Awards | Exhibitors are eligible for Expo awards including: Best Company Overall; Best Management Team; Most Innovative Technology; and The People’s Choice.
Sponsors |Event sponsors show other industry leaders their support for clean and green tech initiatives; receive recognition on the PortTechLA website and in the PortTechExpo program, banners, advertisements, and electronic newsletters; and are invited to give a one-hour presentation to hundreds of distinguished attendees.
Platinum and Gold sponsors from 2011 included the Port of Los Angeles, Siemens, and US Hybrid Corporation. US Hybrid President, Dr. Abas Goodarzi, discussed his path in the green technology market during sponsor presentations. He founded the electric and hybrid train production company nearly 30 years ago, and felt that sponsoring the TechExpo was also an opportunity for mentorship. “I’ve experienced the product development, finance needs, and marketing responsibilities of an emerging technology business, and I want to show support for those who are just starting out. They are improving the way our Port operates,” he said. Do you think your company’s business model would inspire others? PortTechLA is now seeking sponsors for the 2012 Expo. Please contact PortTechLA for more information.

Air Quality at the Port

We have an excellent program line-up on March 13 when we welcome Dr. Matt Miyasato of South Coast AQMD to discuss Air Quality at the Ports. This would be a great chance to ask Dr. Miyasato all those burning questions entrepreneurs need to know about upcoming procurements, the kinds of technologies that interest AQMD in solving air quality issues, how they are deployed and what he sees as new requirements in helping to improve air quality in the region. We will also host Chris Chase of the Port of Los Angeles Marketing Department who will share some of his insights into the operations of the three railroads that operate in the port complex. A special presentation will be made by Betty Young for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and Chuck Labitan of Innovative Transportation Systems Corp will give a presentation on the zero-emission container movement system they are developing. You can register by clicking below.

"Business Plans to Raise Money"
There are two primary reasons for investing the time, research and energy into creating a business plan - to create a business map to guide the development of the enterprise or to raise money. Every business, especially young businesses and startups, need to plan - and when presenting to investors, banks, partners, new employees or potential customers, it has to be written - in a format that is well organized, presents the important elements to business success and demonstrates the leaders of the firm have a thorough foundation and understanding of what is required to build a successful enterprise.

The registration fee is $25 for this event ($5 for students with ID).

The PortTech Enterprise Forum meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at LA Harbor College, 1111 Figueroa Place, Wilmington, CA 90744.

PortTech Enterprise Forum:
Hydrogen Trucks at the Ports

Network with other entrepreneurs and our team of seasoned professionals and service providers at the PortTech Enterprise Forum.

The introduction of a heavy-duty drayage truck at the Port of Los Angeles was an event of signal importance back in July when Vision Motor Corp. delivered its first hydrogen powered Tyrano Class 8 truck to Total Transportation Services, Inc. (TTSI). Now it's been a couple of months and we can learn about both the development of the vehicle, and the process of putting it into service. This program will be a fine opportunity to follow the introduction of this new technology innovation which contributes to the greening of the Ports.

The PortTech Enterprise Forum meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 10am - 12pm at the Los Angeles Harbor College Technology Center (call 310-233-4000 for directions).

Parking is reserved for PortTech Enterprise Forum attendees in Lots 6&8. If you need a map or parking permit, email us.

June 14th, PortTech Enterprise Forum

"The June 14th meeting of the PortTech Enterprise Forum will be a different format from our usual as we will have a panel discussion on exporting your clean/green tech product overseas.
The participants will include Leticia Arias from the US Commercial Service, Maurice Kogon of the CITD at El Camino College, Jim MacLellan of the Port of Los Angeles, and Jonathan Jaech of Connolly Bove Lodge and Hutz. This is an outstanding panel promises to deliver a comprehensive view of exporting your products, the ins and outs of dealing with overseas reps, protecting your intellectual property overseas, and financing the deal. We have invited a local tech entrepreneur who is currently exporting successfully to give us his first-person views as a set-up to the panel.

Of course we'll also save a slot for an entrepreneur who wishes to make a financing presentation -- very important as we begin the process of training presenters for the September 14th, Second Annual PortTechExpo (mark your calendars, please)."

PTEF is next Tuesday at LA Harbor College. We have a great program line-up with an entrepreneur presentation by Phil Ambrose, the Founder and CEO of HazSim, a company that provides low cost, innovative simulation and hands-on training for hazardous materials (http://hazsim.com). Phil will share the details on his entrepreneurial endeavor and we'll provide constructive feedback on the presentation. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in PTEF's on-site coaching.

Phillip Sanfield is our special guest presenter from the Port of Los Angeles, where he is Director of Media Relations (www.portoflosangeles.org). Phillip will be speaking about how to use the media to best advantage to advance your company's business plan. Phillip's experience is extensive indeed. Harbor" newspaper, and also managed the News-Pilot, a San Pedro daily paper (http://sanpedronewspilot.com).

We'll also be discussing the results of our recent "Customer Satisfaction Survey" and asking for your thoughts on how we can improve or expand our program offerings.

Finally, we'll have Jack Babbitt, President of California Sulphur (www.devcousa.com/losangle.htm) tell us about his company, and how their technologies impact the South Bay. California Sulphur is our program sponsor for the May meeting. Many thanks to Jack and California Sulphur Company (a Devco Affiliate) for their generosity!
